New publication in the Journal of Public Economics
Davide Cerruti, Claudio Daminato and Massimo Filippini published their article "The impact of policy awareness: Evidence from vehicle choices response to fiscal incentives" in the Journal of Public Economics.
The paper documents limited awareness by a representative sample of Swiss drivers about the presence of cantonal fiscal incentives towards fuel efficient vehicles, and highlights that limited awareness represents a critical barrier to the effectiveness of public programs.
To estimate the effect of awareness, the authors leverage a field experiment randomizing information about the mere existence of the fiscal incentives, showing how the simple intervention substantially increases policy awareness among vehicle buyers and affects consumers’ vehicle choices. Furthermore increased awareness induces consumers to purchase vehicles that consume less fuel.
