Policy Brief published on “Adoption of battery electric vehicles: the role of government incentives and solar PV”

This policy brief summarizes how much cantonal purchase subsidies and circulation tax discounts affect the adoption of battery electric vehicles. Additionally, it provides evidence that the diffusion of solar photovoltaic encourages BEV adoption.

We document that purchase subsidies help promoting battery electric vehicles (BEVs) while circulation tax discounts are not so effective. When the market share of new BEVs is already a few percentage points high, purchase subsidies become less cost-effective in promoting the adoption of BEVs. We also show that the diffusion of solar PV encourages BEV adoption, possibly because people plan to charge the vehicle with self-produced electricity. At the end, we provide some policy recommendations on the promotion of BEVs based on the results of the study.
